Notes from
Backstage How we can see the
world this season
As
the fifth season of Carolina Performing Arts begins, we
focus on a theme we’re calling “See The
World.”
But what does that mean?
Our home
at Carolina means that we are surrounded by students,
faculty, staff and researchers from all over the globe.
Our proximity to RTP, nearby universities, and global
business in the region gives us the opportunity to
experience language, culture and cuisine from all over
the world. We live in one of the most cosmopolitan and
multicultural areas in the Southeast.
But for all
that, it’s easy to miss the vibrant performing arts
created by those cultures and regions. If we keep
programming the same kinds of experiences every year —
an orchestra here, a jazz group there — we miss the
chance to see what happens when we bring the whole of
the world’s arts together.
From performances that
remain close to their roots (Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca, Ravi and Anoushka Shankar, fiddler Eileen Ivers) to those that revel in
mixing influences (Saharan rockers Tinariwen, Béla Fleck/Zakir Hussein/Edgar Meyer,
Compañía Nacional de Danza), this
season endeavors to bring to you in Chapel Hill as much
of the world as we can manage to fit into Memorial Hall.
We fervently hope that these artists open doors for you
to new worlds, new artistic expressions and new ways of
looking at your neighbors both here in the Triangle and
on this
planet.

Seen and Heard at Memorial
Hall Subscriber & Donor Open
House a big hit!
On
September 8, Carolina Performing Arts hosted its annual
Subscriber & Donor Open House at Memorial
Hall.
Attendees enjoyed refreshments, hors
d'œuvres, and bite-sized desserts and were treated to
backstage tours of Memorial Hall and a behind-the-scenes
peak at how our production staff puts together a
performance each night. One participant said this was
the best backstage tour he'd ever experienced, better
even than Radio City Music Hall in New
York!
Attendees were also eligible to win door
prizes, including concessions vouchers and an Alvin
Ailey American Dance Theater poster!
For the
opportunity to attend next season's open house, please
visit the Carolina Performing Arts
Society homepage to read about
membership and its
benefits.
Musical legends highlight
Sept-Oct! Rollins, Shankar, Fleck will
perform in Memorial Hall this fall!
Carolina Performing Arts is
kicking its 5th season in Memorial Hall off with a bang
this September in October, presenting three different
performances
from heralded musical innovators
and legends.
On September 22, the saxophone
colossus, Sonny Rollins, will perform at 7:30 PM,
opening up the 2009/10 season with smooth jazz sounds
and Grammy-winning prowess. Rollins will perform such
favorites as "Strode Rode," "Nishi" and "Don't Stop the
Carnival!" A limited number of tickets are still

Then, on October 6, Carolina
Performing Arts will welcome one of music's living

The Loading Dock is now
open! CPA's newest series kicks off
with Low
by Rha Goddess!
Performance
artist and poet Rha Goddess will launch Carolina
Performing Arts' newest series, The Loading Dock, with
her new play, Low, on October
2.
Transporting audiences with a new, intimate
setup on the Memorial Hall stage, The Loading Dock
bridges the gap between audience and performer. In
Low, Rha Goddess takes us on an all-too-common
journey through the mental health system, examining the
stigma, fear and confusion surrounding mental illness. A
bitingly articulate, darkly funny performance,
Low is a one-woman theater piece you won't soon
shake from memory!
A limited number of tickets
are available for this special performance. ORDER
NOW!
See you at Memorial
Hall!
