Carolina Performing Arts brings to UNCs campus a dazzling array of live performances in genres ranging from American roots and classical to jazz and dance, and more.
Performances can be a resource for academic classes and programs. The academic connections to the performing arts range from the straightforward (a Bach performance for a music history class) to the holistic (a Bach performance for a course in psychology or mathematics – stressing contextual, historical connections) to the imaginative (a Bach performance for a course in psychology mathematics – stressing structure and form, or theories of knowledge). Faculty members in numerous departments already make such connections and incorporate performing arts experiences into course syllabi.
Mellon Distinguished Scholar Joy Kasson is available to consult with faculty members on the most effective ways to integrate the arts into their academic courses.
Faculty seminars and reading groups will be held throughout the academic year for faculty and graduate students who wish to explore the pedagogy of academic arts incorporation, as well as to share ideas about planning and incorporating the arts into the curriculum. Throughout the year, Arts@TheCore hosts faculty workshops to discuss ways to integrate the performing arts into the academic mission of the entire university. This summer Joy Kasson, the Andrew W. Mellon Distinguished Scholar for Carolina Performing Arts, will host workshops on July 11th and August 11th. Topics will include:
