The Concept

The goal of Arts@TheCore is to redefine the role of the performing arts in the academy and increase direct faculty involvement with the arts.

We believe that the performing arts can play a critical role in inspiring faculty to extend and re-imagine their own intellectual, disciplinary, and interdisciplinary frontiers. For the performing arts to establish itself at the core of university life, faculty must have ample opportunity to:

  • Experience the performing arts and integrate them as core elements of the university education
  • Share in the curatorial responsibility for programming and season offerings
  • Integrate the performing arts into instruction and research

In 2012, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded a five-year, $800,000 grant to Carolina Performing Arts for the creation and support of Arts@TheCore programs. These programs include lectures, seminars, faculty workshops, and curricular connections that serve to place the performing arts at the core of the 21st century university education at UNC.

Arts@TheCore facilitates an increased student presence at performances and provides opportunities for students to engage with artists and the performing arts as part of their coursework.
