Upon moving to New York from his native Cuba in 1999, drummer Dafnis Prieto immediately had a major impact on the Latin and jazz music scenes and was recognized for both his virtuoso playing and composing.
Combining a classical education with a number of interests and projects developed outside the academy, Prieto has served on the Music Faculty at NYU since 2005, toured Europe with the groundbreaking group Columna B and was the recipient of a 2011 MacArthur “genius grant.”
Appearing in conjunction with the North Carolina Jazz Festival, the Dafnis Prieto Sextet provides the perfect vehicle for Prieto’s penchant to take risks as a composer.
